Interview with Greg Pewthers (Bassist)

So what’s your band and how would you describe your music? Weren’t some of you guys in other bands we may have heard of?
I’d say we are a heavy metal band and we play heavy metal (THE DEVASTATED). Yes, all the members were a part of other bands. I played in IMPENDING DOOM and OBLIGE. Manny played in IMPENDING DOOM and has filled in for numerous other bands, BLEEDING THROUGH, ABACABB, etc. The rest of the guys were all in OBLIGE.

How’s Century Media treating you?
It is amazing being labelmates with some of my favorite bands. It is definitely a family vibe over at CM.

What is your favorite aspect of touring?
Personally, my favorite part about the road is waking up in a different city every day, and hanging out with the other bands all day and night.

What are your plans for the near future?
Tour tour tour. We have a US tour with MOLOTOV SOLUTION and FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY set for Sept-Oct. As well as a few Mexico dates with MOLOTOV SOLUTION again and NO BRAGGING RIGHTS. The album will be coming out in the first few months of 2012, and it is going to be titled Devil’s Messenger. Go pick that up!

Can you name a few of your influences for us?
Some big influences for myself would be bands WHITE ZOMBIE, PANTERA, Mostly 90′s stuff. As a band… well everyone listens to different stuff, so it’s kind of hard to say. We basically play what we wanna hear.

Any advice for the aspiring musicians out there?
Practice practice practice, and please, I can’t stress this enough….DO SOMETHING ORIGINAL! Don’t try to be the next so and so….try to be the first!

Let me just ask you one more question, what bands would be on your dream tour of choice?!
DEFTONES, WHITE ZOMBIE, ALICE IN CHAINS, THE DEVASTATED. Boom. Shooting for the sky on that one. Haha.

How is it being on Metal Blade Records alongside some truly legendary bands?
Truly a dream come true, we love being a part of the metal blade family. They are very supportive and have really gone to bat for us a number of times.

What is your favorite aspect of touring?
Meeting fans. It’s like meeting family for the first time. The best is when you’ve met fans through social networking and then see them on tour, it’s like hanging with old friends even thought you’ve actually just met them in person.

What are your plans for the near future? Any big shows or albums in the works?
Right now we’re in pre-production for the follow up to Fragments of Form and Function. We’re really excited about it, should be out next summer.

Can you name some of your major influences?
Sure Marty Friedman, Per Nilson, John Petrucci, gonna have to throw Jeff Loomis in there for good measure, and my band mates, they are very influential.

Any advice for aspiring musicians out there?
Practice your ass off, and be happy with the music you make. As long as you are happy with your music, and playing it nothing else matters.

If you could tour with any bands, who would be on your dream tour?
Oh man… MEGADETH, BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, CARCASS, SCAR SYMMETRY, and OVERKILL! I’d sign my life away for that tour!
